Transmission Repair & Maintenance
Most modern automatic transmissions are electronically controlled devices, designed to engage the final drive and transfer the engine’s power to your vehicle’s wheels. Because of the complexity of this system, the transmission is the second most expensive component on most vehicles. If left unattended, transmission problems can become so expensive that repairing the vehicle may not be practical. Although some wear is normal, proper transmission maintenance can help you significantly extend the life of your vehicle’s transmission.
Manual (standard) transmissions are much simpler systems; operation of these systems involves a combination of gears that are selectable and transferred by the driver using a clutch. On a manual transmission, the clutch is the most common part to fail. To properly replace a worn clutch, the engine and transmission assembly must be separated, the clutch disc, pilot, throw out bearings and pressure plate replaced and possibly the flywheel mating surface refinished. It’s the extensive labor required that results in the high cost associated with this repair. If there is a fluid leak in your vehicle’s standard transmission, it is far cheaper to repair the leak than to repair the results of ignoring it.
Getting more popular today is all wheel drive vehicles. The difference between 4wd & AWD is that the power from the engine is automatically or constantly applied to all four wheels. AWD units work great, but their maintenance is extremely important. Neglected maintenance on an AWD vehicle can significantly shorten its lifespan. We recommend replacing your transfer case fluid according to vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations or at least every 60,000 miles.
Curt’s Service recommends checking your vehicle’s transmission system every 30,000 miles.
